What is a Clubhouse?
A Clubhouse is primarily a community of people. Much more than simply a social service or program, a Clubhouse is most importantly a community of people who are working together toward a common goal.
A Clubhouse is a community intentionally organized to support individuals living with serious and persistent mental illness. Through participation in a Clubhouse people are given the opportunities to rejoin the worlds of friendships, family, important work, employment, education, and access the services and supports they may individually need. A Clubhouse is a restorative environment for people who have had their lives drastically disrupted, and need the support of others who believe that recovery from mental illness is possible for all.

Why are Club Nova clients referred to as members? Club Nova uses the term “member” to reflect the voluntary, community-based nature of the clubhouse. Using this term makes it clear that members are integral and active participants of the program. Club Nova exists for, by, and because of its members.

Do Club Nova members participate in all aspects of running the Clubhouse? Yes. Members are involved in the intake and orientation of new members, housing placements, hiring of new staff, building maintenance, setting policy, advocacy initiatives, meal preparation and service and program development.

Do you have to pay to be a member of Club Nova? No, membership is free and continues as long as a member desires to be part of the clubhouse.

Does Club Nova provide psychiatric treatment, including medication and therapy? No. The Club Nova approach to psychiatric rehabilitation is non-medical and community-based. There are no medical staff at Club Nova. Club Nova members are encouraged by staff and fellow members to comply with medications and to keep appointments with their doctors, but they are not required to do so to remain members. Club Nova maintains a relationship with the University of North Carolina Hospitals where many of its members seek medical treatment.

What kind of jobs do members have in the community through the transitional employment program? The jobs vary from year to year and depending on what’s available in the community at the time. Jobs in the past have included maintenance work at the YMCA, Carolina Fitness, and other businesses. Other job placements include positions at Staples, UNC School of Social Work, Open Eye Cafe, the Mental Health Association, Club Nova Apartments, and others. Many members hold independent jobs and have contributed to the community for many years.
